Win7 - DVD with different Licensekey

Postby [SoE]_martinol » Mon Jul 26, 2010 1:31 pm

I was wondering:
I have W7 Home Premium DVDs (installed on my PC), and also a HP notebook with preinstalled Win7 Home Premium. Now, if I would like to kill everything on the disk because the HP bloatware is unbearable, would I be able to reinstall Win7 without the HP Recovery thing with my DVD, but use the HP win7-key?

Yeah i see your point about not wanting all the HP shit on it.

I think the discs should all be the same just some are branded differently depending on which company sold them.
The HP shit prob came from another disc they may or may not have given you.
As long as you have any full version W7 disc and a valid W7 key u should be fine i think.
I'd make sure the desktop key stays with the desktop and the notepad key stays with the notepad tho.

If you're still not sure then you can always install windows on another hard drive, maybe external if u have one, and get the
machine to boot up from it first. Time consuming tho.
Failing that just uninstall the HP crap and clean up ur registry.

I once had a PC that was pre-installed with a completely different key from the sticker they shoved on my pc case... dumbasses haha!

...and make sure u use the same version as your key obv..

starter, premium, ultimate.

or no!

dont format the recovery partition it will just lie dormant anyway and may be a life saver one day, they will ask u to initalize this if u hve serious problems, if u tell them u deleted it they may tell u to fuck off depending on the fault!

if by small chance it doesnt work, this means u can just recover and get ur system up and running on a valid license!

btw f8 is the recovery key on a hp if u didnt know already

thx- it should work with different install mediums, but one key per system, according to my research

i'd wanted ubuntu installed, but it chokes on the notebook monitor or the ATI card in it. installing win 7 from the dvd didnt work well, it got stuck in final phase of installation, my guess is HP hardware kicked it in the balls and you have to use their 'customized' version.

i like the design and specs of this notebook, but HP is absolutely shit with software - they put 4 partiotions on the drive, each one primary, so you HAVE to delete one in order to installe some other os. 6 DVD's full with the recovery partition is insane, most of it filled with their stupid 'tools'

they even rigged it to install a fucking toolbar in firefox when you dl and install it! thats ridiculous! motherfuckers. i dont have the energy to fool around with linux other than the easypeasy ubuntu/mint so i'm recovering right now back to HP. a pity..

Marti,

it should be fine. I read that all the Win 7 DVDs are the same but the licence key you get is what determines what version is installed.
I've probably got more friends than you've got cows.
